Testimonial: Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd., the home grown auto manufacturing
company, is a pioneer in the field of SUVs. Their Jeep MM 540 is still the
most used conveyance by the rural rich. To have an upper hand in the market,
the Mahindras had launched the Thar in October 2010 which became popular
immediately. An AC version of Mahindra Thar was introduced in 2012 as there
was tough competition coming from the likes of Maruti Gypsy and the Force
Gurkha.

The robustness of the MM540, the steel body and the removable top are
retained in the new Thar. There are three variants of the Thar; DI 4x2, DI
4x4 and CRDe 4x4. This vehicle comes in five colors; black, red, silver,
beige and white for the CRDe version and in champagne and white for the DI
variants. The round head lamps, the steel grille and the turn indicators
located on the wheel arches are the features at the front. The hinged front
glass frame can be dropped on to the bonnet.

Mahindra Thar has three doors. The interiors are kept simple with three
comfortable seats in the front. The longitudinal rear seats are foldable
which help to accommodate more luggage. A simple instrument panel and a dash
board with blower and heater controls are provided in the DI versions. The
CRDe version has an AC unit. As there is no power steering, the wheel is big
enough to allow easy maneuvering for the DI variants. A rack and pinion
power steering system with 9" booster is provided for CRDe versions.

Mahindra Thar CRDe is powered by a 2500 cc, 105 bhp, 247 NM torque diesel
engine. The DI versions have 2523 cc, 63 bhp, 182 NM torque engines. The
CRDe engine with drive-by-wire technology helps in fuel economy and faster
throttle response. CRDe versions give a mileage of 16.55 kmpl and a top
speed of 124 kmph. The DI variants have a mileage of 18.06 kmpl and a top
speed that touches 100 kmph. LSPV brakes help against locking and loss of
control of wheels while on rough terrains. The front brakes are disc type
and the rear ones are drum type for all versions. Transmission is through a
five speed manual gear box.

The three variants of the Mahindra Thar DI 4x2, DI 4x4 and CRDe 4x4 are
approximately priced at Rs 4.81 lakhs, 5.31 lakhs and 7.40 lakhs,
respectively. The BorgWarner 4 WD system helps the Thar to deal with rough
terrains. The climbing ability in the sloping terrains, with a crawl ratio
of 2.48, makes Mahindra Thar very popular among the motorsport enthusiasts.
